I was named Irina, after both Eirene, the goddess of peace in the Greek mythology, and Ilya, my great grandfather. As a child-immigrant, I asked* to change my name to Irit, hoping to blend into the new phonetic reality. Yet the complexity grew with every language I learned. What sounds organic in one language, is a tongue-twister in another. What is my name? What is my language?
